CBD and Alcohol: Do They Mix?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is derived from the hemp plant and classified as a type of cannabinoid. While these chemicals are commonly found in marijuana, CBD derivatives do not contain the psychoactive properties. This is due to the lack of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is what produces the “high” feeling. 

Before deciding if CBD is for you, it’s best to understand the types of products including:

• Broad-Spectrum - Has no THC and multiple naturally found cannabinoids 
• Full-Spectrum - Contains THC and all naturally found cannabinoids
• Isolate - Contains only CBD and no other cannabinoids 

Not much is known about the mixing of CBD and alcohol. While this isn’t exactly comforting to hear, it shows how the research is limited in certain areas. We may understand individually how both impact the body, but together proves less than fully researched for right now. 

It may be best to discuss your alcohol consumption with your doctor before taking a CBD product. They will be able to discuss the benefits and downsides of using the two together. Much of this depends on the strength of the CBD oil and the type of alcohol you are consuming. While we do not know if they are necessarily bad to mix together, you should always take care to do your research beforehand. This includes discussing your habits and medical history with your doctor. Your doctor may even be able to better explain the effects of alcohol on the system, especially when combined with a CBD product. 

There isn’t enough research to provide a definitive answer for what happens when you mix CBD and alcohol. However, as it stands alcohol can be seen as working to reduce inhibitions when consumed. This means that alcohol has a similar effect to that of CBD, which also is meant to relax without the “high” feeling found with THC based products. 

According to Healthline, there is a 1979 study that’s mentioned in which participants were given alcohol and CBD together. A small sample was given 200 mg of CBD along with 1 gram of alcohol for every 2.2 lbs of body weight. The results found that combination of CBD and alcohol caused impairments with motor skills and participants’ perception of time. 

However, the Healthline article does mention that this is an outdated study and most likely used more CBD than most traditionally use today. Despite a lack of research on the combination, there are numerous studies on how CBD impacts the body as seen with a few below:

Harvard Health Publishing put together a guide to understand what you should not mix CBD with and included:

• Not mixing with OTC or prescription medication 
• Specifically to not mix with substances that make you feel sleepy (opioids, antidepressants, antihistamines, and even herbal supplements like melatonin)
• Taking with stimulants can lead to decreased appetite as well

They also mentioned serious interactions with blood thinner medication, heart rhythm medication, thyroid medication, and some medications for seizures. This is not meant to scare or deter using CBD, but you should always discuss your medication and CBD use with your doctor before mixing or taking at the same time. This will ensure that a qualified medical professional is aware of your medical history and can offer advice on whether it’s safe or not to take CBD.
